What Francisco de la Torre has accomplished

Few question the modernization of the city of Malaga since Francisco de la Torre took over the municipal baton. Since 2000, the city has surprised by its power of reinvention, becoming a fashionable destination for tourists and investors. Now that the octogenarian PP politician is running for his sixth re-election, it is time to assess whether he fulfilled the promises on housing made in the 2019 campaign.    


During the mandates of Francisco de la Torre, Málaga has added 47,511 inhabitants, reaching the 579,066 it had in 2022 according to the INE. Demographic pressure and the interest aroused by large real estate investors has made housing management a priority for its citizens.


Situation that motivated many of the 2019 electoral Phone Lead promises to talk about the construction of public housing, affordable rentals and social rental assistance. According to data from the Malaga City Council from last March, since 2019 “among new and second-occupancy homes, 194 protected homes have been delivered.” Added to this figure are another 53 shelters for young people, which will be delivered in the first half of this year (38 in Villazo, seven in San Rafael and eight in Zurbarán).


In different phases of construction there are a total of 526 more homes, managed by the Municipal Housing Institute (IMV) and the Malaga Municipal Housing Society. Of them, 476 are for rent in the University sector and 35 for sale, on José María Garnica Avenue.
