How can trees provide water?

Generally, reforestations are organized with the objective of establishing recreation areas, greening a landscape, improving air quality and/or generating more oxygen, but on this occasion one was carried out seeking to generate, in addition to this... Water? How Can trees give water?

Like every year, for five years, Grupo Modelo, through its Foundation, organizes collective volunteering to commemorate World Environment Day, with different activities related to the topic, in various parts of the Republic and now also in five others. Latin American AQB Directory countries where ABInBev has operations: Honduras, Peru, Colombia, El Salvador and Ecuador.

In addition to this, Grupo Modelo recently joined the Agua Capital environmental initiative, a collective action platform that seeks to combine commitments and efforts from different sectors of society for water security in the Valley of Mexico.

Conveniently linking both situations, one of the main activities of the Model Volunteering was in support of the pilot project of Agua Capital and the Environment Secretariat of the CDMX “Cultivamos Agua Topilejo” , a scheme that shows us how trees can provide water.

How can trees provide water?
The Cultivemos Agua Topilejo pilot project consists of the reforestation of 6 hectares in San Miguel Topilejo, a community located in Tlalpan, south of Mexico City, with fruit trees: apple, pear, plum, peach and maguey pulquero.



The planting of these trees is done with a special technique to achieve the main objective: water retention and filtration.

The reforestation process was as follows:

The reforested property has land with different heights, first contour curves were drawn to determine where the trees would be placed to achieve water retention.
Later, the Model Volunteers came to plant trees at the points indicated with flags. Trees of various species were placed in a row, at different heights of the mountain, under the instructions of experts to ensure conservation success.
